Engineering Professors Win Presidential Teaching Professorship Awards

The College of Engineering and Engineering Technology is proud to announce that two of its professors won the distinction in 2022 of NIU Presidential Teaching Professor. The award is granted each year by President Lisa Freeman’s office to faculty who have demonstrated commitment in their roles as instructors and have achieved a tremendous amount of success in all areas of teaching.

This year, Engineering Technology Professor Shanthi Muthuswamy, Ph.D., and Mechanical Engineering Professor Nicholas Pohlman, Ph.D. have each been named as recipients of this prestigious honor.

Dr. Muthuswamy has been a professor in the Engineering Technology Department since 2010. During her time here, she was instrumental in developing a series of tutoring videos for students called “5-Minute Solutions” for which she was awarded NIU’s David W. Raymond Award. Also, she is the first woman of color to join the College Industry Council on Material Handlin Education’s (CICMHE) executive committee as the president.

Dr. Pohlman has been on the faculty of the Mechanical Engineering Department since 2008. His research has contributed to last spring’s landmark finding at the U.S. Department of Energy’s Fermi National Accelerator Laboratory in Batavia, which released the first results from the Muon g-2 experiment that made headlines worldwide. Dr. Pohlman will also complete the Honors Faculty Fellowship in 2022-2023.

“Congratulations to Dr. Muthuswamy and Dr. Pohlman for this recognition of their commitment to, and success in, the many activities associated with outstanding teaching,” said Dean Donald Peterson, Ph.D. “Each of them is very deserving of the recognition that this award represents.”

These awards are not the first for CEET. In past years, several other CEET professors have won this award, including Industrial and Systems Professor and Department Chair Purush Damadoran, Ph.D., Mechanical Engineering Professor Brianno Coller Ph.D., and Industrial and Systems Engineering Professor (Emeritus) Murali Krishnamurti Ph.D.
