Career Opportunities in Sustainable Energy Are Growing

For students who dream of a career where they can contribute to the world by promoting sustainable energy and conservation of our planet’s resources, the opportunities for a career in this exciting field are now even greater.

Recently, the U.S. Dept. of Energy’s Clean Energy Corps announced it will hire 1,000 additional workers across the country from various backgrounds and experience levels.

Building on this exciting news, Illinois topped the list again for the most Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design LEED-certified construction projects in 2021 by the U.S. Green Building Council.

These latest developments point to the vast opportunities available in sustainable energy, energy efficiency and environmental engineering. NIU’s College of Engineering and Engineering Technology (CEET) is the optimal choice to gain the knowledge and experience needed to excel and contribute significantly to this field. In fact, CEET’s Department of Engineering Technology is one of only four universities in the nation that offers a program that covers the ISO energy management standard.

This program introduces students to energy-related technical and management topics including energy management and auditing, building management, energy efficiency in manufacturing, and HVAC. Courses in the curriculum also cover important energy production topics, such as the design of solar arrays and appropriate utilization of wind, geothermal, and hydroelectric power. Students also acquire knowledge on proper methods to promote environmental health.

With a degree in Engineering Technology and an emphasis in Energy and Environmental Engineering Technology, students can position themselves as experts in this field and look forward to an exciting and lucrative career.  For those who already have a related degree or are looking to change careers, the university offers an Energy Management certificate as a way to jump-start this transition.
