Renewable energy class visits Byron Nuclear Generating Station

This week our MEE454/554 Alternative and Renewable Energy class visited the Byron Generating Station’s Community Open House on Monday, Oct. 7. They observed a carbon-neutral technology at the scale of operation for delivery to the public. Also, they received a sense of the safety protocols in place from the control room to the training to manage any potential contamination. “Just seeing the size and scale of a facility generating 2300 MW of power is important to the perspective of energy generation needs when alternative forms of wind, water, and sunlight are used for replacement,” said Nicholas A. Pohlman, Associate Professor, Department of Mechanical Engineering.
