CEET’s 10% growth contributes to NIU’s overall 4.3% enrollment increase

Northern Illinois University continues to build momentum, reporting a 4.3% overall enrollment increase this fall. The university now serves 16,078 students, reflecting significant gains among new freshmen, transfer students and returning Huskies.

The College of Engineering and Engineering Technology (CEET) experienced especially strong growth, with a total enrollment now of 1,467 students—up 10% from last year. The number of new engineering freshmen rose 21%, while transfer enrollment climbed 17% compared to 2024.

Faculty and advisors in CEET are focused on helping these students succeed through personalized outreach, mentoring and academic support.

The increased enrollment represents rising student interest in applied, career-ready engineering and tech degrees, said CEET Dean Dave Grewell. He called the growth “a true team achievement.”

Initiatives such as the Engineering Accelerator for incoming freshmen and support from partners such as the Engineering and Technology Alumni Society are also crucial, Grewell said.

Significantly, there was growth in all four departments (mechanical, electrical, industrial and systems, and engineering technology) and both programs (biomedical and mechatronics).

“We’re thrilled to see such significant progress that enables us to reach and teach more students,” Grewell said. “This reflects both the strength of our programs and the passion of our faculty, staff and students. Every day, we’re making engineering accessible and relevant—not just through curriculum, but through mentorship, hands-on projects and partnerships.”
