Northern Illinois University is offering a golden opportunity to Rockford-area community college students – a chance to earn a bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering while taking NIU classes at Rock Valley College.
Through NIU Engineering @ RVC, you earn the same four-year degree offered at NIU’s DeKalb campus without the drive. After taking freshman and sophomore-level courses through RVC, your junior and senior-level courses are taught by NIU instructors on RVC’s campus.

There are three steps to earning your B.S. in mechanical engineering through NIU at RVC.
1. Begin at Rock Valley College in the Associate of Engineering Science or Associate of Science degree.
2. Work closely with your community college advisor and NIU advisor Dr. Matt Gonser (firstname.lastname@example.org) to make sure you are taking all the pre-requisite courses needed for your bachelor’s degree from NIU.
3. Apply to NIU’s Guaranteed Admission Program once you’ve completed at least 24 hours of course credit at Rock Valley College.
During your junior and senior year, your classes and labs will all be on the campus at RVC, but you will be an NIU Huskie with all the benefits. You’ll take NIU classes taught by NIU instructors and will be eligible to participate in NIU student organizations and professional societies. When your coursework is completed, you will cross the stage at the NIU Convocation Center to proudly receive your degree from Northern Illinois University.
